【原文】

五色①令人目盲②；五音③令人耳聾④；五味⑤令人口爽⑥；馳騁⑦畋獵⑧，令人心發狂⑨；難得之貨，令人行妨⑩；是以聖人為腹不為目⑾，故去彼取此⑿。

【注釋】

①五色：指青、黃、赤、白、黑。此指色彩多樣。

②目盲：比喻眼花繚亂。

③五音：指宮、商、角、徵、羽。這裡指多種多樣的音樂聲。

④耳聾：比喻聽覺不靈敏，分不清五音。

⑤五味：指酸、苦、甘、辛、咸，這裡指多種多樣的美味。

⑥口爽：意思是味覺失靈，生了口病。古代以"爽"為口病的專用名詞。

⑦馳騁：縱橫奔走，比喻縱情放蕩。

⑧畋獵：打獵獲取動物。畋，音tian，打獵的意思。

⑨心發狂：心旌放蕩而不可制止。

⑩行妨：傷害操行。妨，妨害、傷害。

⑾為腹不為目：只求溫飽安寧，而不為縱情聲色之娛。"腹"在這裡代表一種簡樸寧靜的生活方式；"目"代表一種巧偽多欲的生活方式。
